Less than a century after settlers arrived in 1626, the event that most
people associate with Salem occurred. Unfortunately, the city is still
famous for the
Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692. However, those that take
the opportunity to find out more about this seaside community realize
Salem has much more to offer.

Located on Salem Bay, the city of Salem is a mere 16 miles north of
Boston. Swampscott and Lynn are found on the southern border, Peabody is
to the west, Beverly is to the north and Marblehead is on the east. The

Salem was incorporated as a town in 1626 and later as a city in 1836. The
city was the second incorporated city in Massachusetts, Boston being the
first. When it was first settled, Salem encompassed most of the North
Shore. Over the years, communities were divided off and renamed.
Easily one of the most historical cities in Massachusetts, Salem's past is
peppered with significant events. It began as one of the first landing
sites for English settlers. In fact, Salem holds the distinction of being
the second oldest settlement in New England. Later, it became the first
major port in the United States.
During the Revolutionary War, Salem was the site of the first armed
resistance in this country to British authority. A substantial trade
market with the East Indians also made Salem well-known. Literary lovers
will appreciate the fact that Salem was the home of famous author
Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Total population is just under 42,000. Average property tax is about
$3,500. Average household income is about $58,000. Median Age is 36.

The MBTA is the Public Transportation for the Greater Boston area. It
breaks down into commuter trains, subway, and bus transit.
The Commuter Trains go from Boston North Station or Boston South Station to the
outlying areas. The
subway system is in-town transportation for getting
around Boston. There are various
bus schedules in and out of Boston to
the outlying areas and then there is some additonal but more limitted Boat
transportation. Both the
Newburyport and Rockport lines go through Salem.

House of Seven Gables.
This 17th-century

novel.

sensible way to tour Salem is the Salem Trolley

trolley tour and shuttle around the historic city. With twelve stops on

Salem Maritime, which is the first National Historic Site in
the National Park System,
and was established to preserve and interpret
the maritime history of New England and the United States. Near there

dining area attracts visitiors with it's quaint seaside village charm and
unique shops and restaurants.
